Fencing Clothing and Equipment

ALL fencers must wear the correct safety clothing when fencing or practising and adhere to safety regulations at all times.

Equipment Requirements
British fencing lays down certain standards for protective clothing that must be worn while fencing. The table below shows the minimum requirement for each section. Note that the lower U14 standard only applies if where all fencers are under 14 and using size 3 weapon or smaller. U14 fencers fencing or competing in a higher age group must have equipment of the higher standard.

The N in 350N or 800N stands for Newtons – the amount of force that the material will resist without being penetrated. All clothing is labelled in Newtons.

The clothing worn by a fencer consists of the following:

  • Jacket
  • Breeches
  • Mask
  • Plastron
  • Socks
  • Glove
  • Chest protector

Electric Fencing

  • Body Wire
  • Lame (Foil and Sabre)

Weapons

  • Electric Foil
  • Epee
  • Sabre
